Offline SEO

Offline SEO refers to everything you do off of your website that impacts your search engine optimization

This is in contrast to on-page SEO, tactics you can use to improve the search engine results page ranking of your website. On-page SEO includes keyword rich blurbs in the site description, targeted keywords on every page and frequently asked questions pages that capture conversational queries. But what can you do as part of offline SEO?

A good example of offline SEO can be found in business directories. These websites are the digital equivalent of the phone book, and some evolved from regional phone book providers. It isn’t enough to have your company name in their database. You need to have a full business name, phone number and email address or website URL in the business directory entry. Furthermore, this same information needs to be consistent across many business directories. This information is mined to determine your actual location for location-based SEO. It is also used to tell people where your business is located when they research it on a map. A side benefit of the links on business directory sites is that they’re considered high quality backlinks, and they will bring customers to your website in the final stage of the sales funnel.

Utilize Your Social Media Profiles

Social media use by business tends to focus on sharing press releases and marketing content. However, it can be a great source of off-line SEO. Include a link to the business website in the social media profile, and do so on every platform you have a presence. This will lead many people to your website, while it increases the association between your business website and your social media accounts. This will lead to your social media profiles as well as your website showing up in company-related searches.

Get Quality Backlinks

There are several ways you can do this, and content spam is not among them. One solution is contacting reporters with interesting stories. Ask them to mention your company or brand, and it builds your brand recognition with search engines. Get interviewed regarding charitable efforts, hiring events or as a subject matter expert and include your website name. The news stories are considered highly trustworthy by search engines. Furthermore, this type of content will circulate in the general community and build brand recognition with a new audience. Another approach is working with influencers. You might write a guest column for their blog. Or you could have an influencer whose audience mirrors your customer base recommending your product. Their social media promotions will build quality backlinks. Alternatively, you could have employees comment as experts in forums, referencing the company's product and even useful links. Just don't do it too much or share unrelated content or you'll be classified as a spammer by search engines.
